For many couples, having the prospective father present in the delivery room, standing by his partner’s side, is of paramount importance. While the physical process is undergone by the woman, men frequently display such authentic facial expressions that the photographs capturing their experience during the childbirth become indelible in the family album.
During a recent instance, a humorous array of expressions was captured on the countenance of an Arkansas father, courtesy of a playful technician who began taking pictures just before the mother began her pushing phase, following a labor of six arduous hours.
What’s even more astonishing is that this marked the third child for 32-year-old truck driver Brett Sills. He had been present for the birth of each of his children. The only divergence this time was that it was the first occasion when he actually looked downward while his partner of six years, Amanda Roelofs, was in the process of pushing.
As the baby finally emerged, the grimacing father of three stood there in a state of stunned immobility, as though unable to fathom what lay before his eyes. “Dawg face is priceless,” quipped one individual in the comments, while another added, “He appears simultaneously terrified and grossed out.”
When his girlfriend first glimpsed the photos, she couldn’t help but burst into laughter. “As I was scrolling through the photos, I started cracking up,” she recounted. “I sent them to my sister-in-law, and she said, ‘You need to post these so they can go viral.'” And viral they went!
But what was transpiring in his mind during that moment? What thoughts were actually racing through his head? “I was just looking at her head! It went from being the size of a baseball to a full-on cantaloupe,” he shared. He also added that despite this being his third experience, it was still something he could never become accustomed to.
On the flip side, his girlfriend wants people to recognize that Sills is an exceptional partner and father. However, he’s just a tad “squeamish” when it comes to childbirth. “Some of the comments on the photo are like, ‘My man better not make that face,'” she noted. “I thought it was hilarious. I wasn’t upset at all.”
The birth of a child stands as one of life’s most exhilarating moments. Even though mothers bear the physical labor, fathers often undergo a broad spectrum of sincere emotions that any photographer would be delighted to capture.
